Crocodile Bank in Chennai is spread across an area of 3.2 hectares. It was established with the purpose of protecting and conserving the endangered reptiles like crocodiles and alligators. The wildlife reserve is a green bed of lush tropical vegetation providing ample shade to the thousands of crocodilians. The main attraction here is the crocodile conservation center which is the largest croc-breeding site in India.
Features of Crocodile Bank in Chennai
- The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust was founded in 1976 by Romulus Whitaker and few other people as a Public Trust managed by a Board of Trustees.
- The CrocBank is located 40 km. south of Chennai city along India's east coast road with the Bay of Bengal as a backdrop.
- The Bank was established with the primary aim to conserve and study India's three endangered crocodilians, the mugger or Crocodylus Paluster, the gharial or Gavialis Gangeticus and the saltwater crocodile or Crocodylus Porosus.
- Starting with 30 mugger adults, the Bank has bred over 5000 and now holds over 2400 crocodilians of 14 different species.
- By 1987, the CrocBank developed a much broader focus, and became the Center for Herpetology, India's premier institution for conservation, research and education regarding the reptiles and amphibians.
- Currently, the Bank features 12 endangered species of turtles and tortoises, five species of snakes, including the King Cobra, Ophiophagus Hannah, water monitor lizards, two species of pythons and albino cobras.
- You can watch these animals closely, housed in enclosures very similar to their natural habitat.
