Cochin carnival is the time of merry making and the entire place gets filled with colors and the joyous laughter of the people. All participate in the feast that is held every year in the last week in Fort Kochi, Kerala. The Cochin Carnival brings along a mood of joyous togetherness and the carnival seems to be the best way to end the year.

The history

The Cochin Carnival Festival dates back to the time of the Portuguese colonial era. It was actually the Portuguese New Year that was celebrated and then with the passage of time the entire city started to participate and enjoy the merry making.

The Cochin Carnival Festival has gone through a lot of evolution and now it has become an occasion for all to enjoy the gaiety of the festivities. The Carnival is unique and it is indeed a pleasure for the youth. There are the special competitions and games that are held and many people participate in them. The city too is dressed up in all its splendor and bears a gay look. There are the special illuminations and during this time the Fort Kochi bears the festive look of the season.

The procession in the Cochin Carnival Festival

The mood of gaiety and color is further heightened by the huge procession on the eve of the New Year. The Carnival seems to be crowned by this procession which is indeed a very colorful affair. The procession is headed by a caparisoned elephant. The rest of the procession has the drum and the music players, the varied forms of folk art, the fabulous floats, the Panchavadyam and many others. There are also the North Indian dancers who participate in the festivities of the Cochin Carnival Festival.
