Nehru Planetarium New Delhi
The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi is located in the rambling surroundings of the Teen Murti House. The place was the official residence of our first president Jawaharlal Nehru. The planetarium was inaugurated by Smt Indira Gandhi on 6th February; 1984.The planetarium was created to educate the people about the space and also about astronomy.The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi has an air conditioned sky theatre which has a dome shaped screen. The screen is made up of fiber glass with about 26 curves and one million hand drilled holes which helps to provide better acoustics. The sky theatre has a capacity for 270 people. The shows are all based on cosmic topics, the solar system or the history of any particular star or planet.
Just at the centre of the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi the Carl Zeiss Spaceflight Master projector is placed on a hydraulic lift which enables it to come up during the shows. The exhibition area of the planetarium displays the interactive models and structures. The master piece of the planetarium is the space module of Soyuz-T-10 that carried the first Indian cosmonaut, Rakesh Sharma to the space.
The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi also organizes events and shows. The Krittika is a magazine on the astronomy world which is published by the museum management. Several quiz contents on astronomy are also conducted. The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi holds film shows on the solar system in English (11.30 a.m. & 3 p.m.) and Hindi (4 p.m. & 1.30 p.m.). A special show in Hindi (10.30 a.m.) is held on Sundays.
The admission fee for the museum is INR 15. Shows re conducted both in Hindi and English. The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi remains open from Tuesday-Sunday. The place is easily accessible by the visitors. The museum is a plethora of information and a must visit.
