Sangeet Natak Akademi Delhi
When inaugurated on January 28, 1953 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the fist President of India, Sangeet Natak Akademi became the first national level academy of art that had received a direct patronage from the Government.Since its inception the Academy has been a steady presence in the endeavor towards preserving the cultural heritage of India through encouragement of music, dance and drama. In order to achieve its means Sangeet Natak Akademi works in close collaboration with state governments and other Art organizations within the country.
Driven by it object of promoting art in all forms, Sangeet Natak Akademi has spawned many institutions across the country. Some of the institutions include-
National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance, Academy, Imphal, Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance), New Delhi and many others.
Sangeet Natak Akademi also organizes seminars and conferences on the topics related to art.
In its archives section Sangeet Natak Akademi also has numerous audio/video tapes, films and photograph which are all rare as well as important to the history of performing arts in the country. The Academy’s library also has over 22,000 books which cover wide range of subjects like Dance, Drama, Folklore, Indian Art, Tribal Studies, Theatre and many other diverse topics all of which converge on Indian Art.
Sangeet Natak Akademi also houses museum-cum-gallery which has a display of over 200 musical instruments. This museum-cum-gallery is located in Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi.
Sangeet Natak Akademi also bestows Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards as recognition to those who have been outstanding in their contribution towards art. The award is the highest form of award to an artist in India and carries money of Rs. 50,000.
