Flagstaff towerDelhi

The Flagstaff is located on the highest point of the Kamla Nehru Ridge and is shaped like a ring shaped octagonal tower. The tower was an impressive building but today it presents a sad picture, one that of despair and neglect. Like most other British monuments in Delhi the Flagstaff tower is located on the Northern side of the city.

This is one monument that has been associated with the sepoy mutiny also refereed to by some historians as the first war of independence. At some point of time the ridge was a hot area and this had led to the death a large number of British Indian Soldiers belonging to the British Bengal army at the time of the revolt. The revolt had forced the British to pack off their families to safer places, and the British families assemble at the Flagstaff tower from where they were escorted under heavy security.
The connection between the flagstaff tower and the revolt doesn’t end there and with in a month of the revolt the mutineers fought bravely at the Flagstaff tower before accepting eventual defeat in the old city.

The flagstaff building is not a stand alone building as it is accompanied by other British buildings like Mutiny Memorial, Charbhuja Mosque etc, which are of equal importance if not more. The cake shaped building has one more attraction, which is of special interest to bird lovers. A large variety of birds can be spotted from this place with some usual antiques by monkeys, which are in abundance in this place.

The building resembles a mini fort which is accompanied by a spiral staircase which takes one to the roof which doubles up as a watch tower that is octagonal in shape.
Unfortunately interior of the tower is out of bounds for the general public and what is even more unfortunate is the deteriorating condition of the tower.
