Jama Masjid Delhi
The Jama Masjid, Delhi is considered to be the principle mosque in Delhi. The mosque was called the Masjid-i-Jahan Numa. The mosque is considered to be the largest and the most wonderful mosque in entire India. The mosque was built by around 5000 craftsmen in the year 1656 AD. The Jama Masjid, Delhi is the last architectural beauty of Emperor Shahjahan. The Jama Masjid, Delhi stands erect on one of Bho Jhala one of the two hills in the Mughal capital of Shahjahanabad. The mosque is an example of the alternate use of vertical strips. Red sandstone and the white marbles are alternately used to beautify the architecture of the mosque. The courtyard of the mosque is built with red sandstone and can be easily reached from the east, north and south. The eastern zone of the mosques ha the most extravagant gateway which has 35 steps. The northern gateway has 39 steps.
The three domes are built in marble and are beautified with black strips. The place of prayer is located in the west side of the mosque. The place is beautified with arches all over and is situated on 260 pillars. These pillars are a support to the fifteen domes. The two minarets edge the domes on both the sides. The backside of the mosque has four minarets all together which are very small in size. The floor of the mosque is created with alternative black and white marbles. The cost of the total building was 10 crores. It is the best of the Islamic architecture. The architecture of the mosque is very scientific. It is said that the walls are built in such an angled manner so that if there is an earthquake ever the walls fall outside.
The Jama Masjid, Delhi has place for about 25000 devotees. There are beautiful imprints on the closets of the mosque. The Northern gate of the mosque has a closet which has the Quran imprinted.
The Jama Masjid, Delhi faced serial blasts in the year 2006. The black day was 14th April, 2006, which was a Friday, the Muslim holy day. There were 13 causalities though the damage of the mosque was not reported.
The Jama Masjid, Delhi remains as a great architectural piece and one of the greatest evidences of the Mughal rule in India. The best place to visit for any Indian or a foreigner.
