INTRODUCTION:

A visit to Delhi will be meaningless with a visit to Raj Ghat, the cremation place of the Father of the Nation. It is located between the main Ring Road and the banks of the Yamuna River and to the southeastern side of the Red Fort.

After being shot dead by Nathu Ram Godse, a Hindu fanatic, Gandhiji’s body was cremated in this place on the bank of the river Yamuna. This was given the name of Raj Ghat or the Samadhi of Gandhiji. Since the performance of the last rites of Gandhiji on 31st January, 1948, this has become an essential place for the tourist’s itinerary. Not only common tourists but even foreign dignitaries include it in their program to pay homage to this personality who has been the symbol of Ahimsa or non violence and a great freedom fighter.

Raj Ghat, the Samadhi is laid amidst the well manicured gardens spread over acres of land. It is a simple square structure on a stone platform made with black marble and a stone footpath approaching the sacred platform. The trees near the platform are labeled with the name of visiting dignitaries who planted trees as homage to the great leader. Some of the prominent names include the name of the British Queen Elizabeth II, Ho Chi Minh, Gough Whitman the former Australian Prime Minister and Dwight Eisenhower the President of USA.

People irrespective of caste creed or color visit the place to pay homage to the Father of the Nation. Political Leaders and entire nation pay homage to this Great Leader every year on his birthday which is the 2nd of October. It is free and open to the visitors on all days.
