INTRODUCTION:

Swaminarayan Akhshardham Temple, Delhi is a massive 200 acres complex on the banks of the river Yamuna. It was inaugurated on 7th Novemeber, 2005 by the President APJ Abdul Kalam. The Rs. 200 crore complex made pink sandstone represents the Indian culture adorned with 20, 000 statues, floral motifs, arches and finely carved out pillars.

It is a masterstroke of the famous architect Virendra Sompura with the concept from Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Swaminarayan Akhshardham Temple, Delhi temple was built under the patronage of Bochasanvasi Akshpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). This contemporary architectural wonder is the product of 7,000 master craftsmen and thousands of volunteers taking almost five years.

The 141 feet high, 316 feet wide and 370 feet long structure, has 234 well decked pillars. Swaminarayan Akhshardham Temple is a blend of the several architectural temple styles. The palatial temple is built with a combination of pink sandstoneand marbles brought from Rajasthan. The beauty of the monument is further enriched by a double storeyed colonnade which encircles the 148 elephants shouldering the monument. The carvings on the colonade speak tales from the epics.

Besides the 141 foot high main monument there is the IMAX Theater, a Swaminaravan Temple, a canteen, few exhibition halls an a serene garden which with fountains and sculptures. It also has about 20,000 statues of Hindu deities with carvings of flora, fauna and some dancing figurines. The Yodi Hradav Kamal, an imaginatively submerged garden which looks like a Lotus from an aerial view. It has stones with engravings of memorable quotes from Swami Vivekananda, Shakespeare and Swaminarayan.

Swaminarayan Akhshardham Temple, Delhi, the pilgrimage place, is turning out to be major tourist attraction for the tourists today. Entry to the complex is free however entry into the theater and exhibition is chargeable. Security is very tight in this area.
