The game of cricket is immensely popular and loved by the people in India. From the last few years, the popularity of the game of cricket has increased considerably. Even though, this game is not the official sport of India, it is more popular than the national sport, which is Hockey. The Britishers first bought cricket to India during their rule. The British expanded their rule in India and eventually spread the game of cricket to all the nooks of India. Cricket in India is more like a religion. Mumbai in India has the majority of cricket lovers. The Indian Parsis were the first to play this game on this land against the Europeans in 1892. Since then this game has never gone on a back foot in India.

The game of cricket in India

The early Indian players namely the four Palwankar brothers, Ganpat, Baloo, Vithal and Shivram, were some of the most famous stars when cricket was new to India. Particularly Baloo, the slow left arm bowler won special acclamation for his performance and Vithal was nominated the captain of the team that comprised of the Hindus. In 1929 the Board of Control for Cricket in India was formed which also a stepping stone for test matches the first one was with England three years later. Ranji Trophy began in the year 1935 and is still being played in India. In this tournament every state gets to field its own team. The Cricket World Cup was bought to India in 1983, which was the only one time. Some of the most famous and commonly known Indian tournaments include the Ranji Trophy, the Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy and the Challenger Series.

Indian spectators take deep interest in the game of cricket since years. The players are idolized and have a huge fan following in the country. Cricket in India has always been adored and played by almost all age groups. More than just a game, the rule on which this game is played sets a certain amount of excitement. The players are often worshipped in certain parts of India and their respective hometowns. Gambling and betting over the games does take place in mainly the metros wherein the bookies have their den. Money and cricket has had a strange relation. Children take coaching for cricket at an early age. Indians are die- hard fans of this game.
