In olden days Goa was known as Gomantakesha. Another theory about Goa's name concerns Lord Krishna, who came to this land and met the gopikas or cowherd girls and, fascinated, named it after them and their cows. 'Govapuri' was this name, which also shortens to 'Goa. The history of the earliest known temples in Goa date back to over a thousand years. Commercialization has not yet overtaken the sanctity of the temples in Goa, as in some other parts of India. The temples have been well maintained and deserve to be visited. One of the principal temples in goa is the Brahma Temple in the village of Brahma Carambolim. Dating from 5 AD, it is one of the few temples dedicated to Brahma to be found anywhere. Some of the famous temples that are worth visiting are the Sri Mangesh , Sri Bagwati, Sri Ananta Temple , Devaki-Krishna temple a fine piece of architecture that displays the eternal love of the mother. The temple of Gopal- Ganapathi is a modern temple architecture built in 1966. It is actually built in the spot where Portuguese army was defeated by the Maratha king Sambhaji. Most of the temples were destroyed by the Portuguese during the period of "Inquisition".
