In olden times, Goa was known as Gomantakesha. The name 'Goa' is formed from the first and the last syllables. Another theory about Goa's name concerns Lord Krishna, who came to this land and met the gopikas or cowherd girls and, fascinated, named it after them and their cows. 'Govapuri' was this name, which also shortens to 'Goa. Shri Ananta Temple is situated in Ponda Taluka at Sovoi Verem a few km from Marcela. This is one of the famous temples situated in goa. It is surrounded on all sides by water and beautiful scenery. Besides the main deity Anant Sheshashayi, the complex also has Shantadurga, Kamini, Narayan and Grampurush temples. Here the main deity is Ananta and it is carved in black stone. This is the only temple of Ananta in Goa
