The festival of Muharram is celebrated in Hyderabad with a lot of pomp and ceremony. The state of Andhra Pradesh and its capital have a sizeable Muslim population and Muharram being an important festival for this religious group it is quite a popular festival in Hyderabad.

Moharram is observed by the Shia sect of Muslims in to pay homage to the martyr Imamm Hussain. The Chote Hazrat ki Dargah is located in Devan Devadi, in Hyderabad, India. The Chote Hazrat ki Dargah was built in the era of Asif Jahis. One needs to a flight of four hundred stairs or more to reach the place of worship. The Dargah (mortuary) was built in the memory of Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Mohammad. It is a famous pilgrimage site for the Muslims and is considered very holy. Muslims from all corners of the country flock to this dargah to offer their prayers during the 8th and 10th day of Muharram, in Hyderabad.
