Chander Nagar
Chander Nagar, today known as Chandannagar located along the banks of river Ganga, established by a French settler, M. D'land. In the past, Chander Nagar was a active port that was renowned for trading of sandalwood. The name of the Chandannagar in Bengali was derived from the word 'Chandan' (sandalwood). This town is a tourist destination, which draws the attention of the tourists for its scenic beauty and tranquil and quiet environment. Jagaddhatri Puja is the most important socio cultural event in Chander Nagar. Within the week of Diwali, the Jagaddhatri Puja takes place for four days. Beautiful puja pandals, stunningly decorated images ornamented with shola-pith ornaments are wonders of handicraft and imagination. Immersion of the images on the fourth day takes place in a lively procession along with tableaux, band music, lights and fireworks and this festival is very captivating, which draws the attention of the lacs of people from far and near, who come to observe the procession throughout the night. - By Road: By road, Chander Nagar is 37 km away from Kolkata via G.T.Road or Delhi road. Taxis and private cars are easily available from Kolkata to visit at Chander Nagar.
- By Rail: Local trains are very frequent from Howrah to Chander Nagar through Eastern Railway main line (on peak time one train is accessible in every 10 or 12 minutes). Many important express and passenger trains stopped at Chander Nagar.
