Kolkata Municipal Corporation was formerly known as Calcutta Municipal Corporation. This body of management and administration is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city of Kolkata. The organization is well recognized, in short, as KMC. Previously it was called CMC. This is a civic administrative body which administers an area of 185 sq. km. The objective of KMC is Purosree Bibardhan, the meaning of which is the progress of the city from the point of view of civic infrastructure. The Bengali phrase is inscribed on its emblem in Bengali script. Right now KMC is headed by Mr. Bikash Bhattacharya the present Mayor of Kolkata.

The KMC is responsible for administering and providing basic infrastructure to the city.

It does its duty to make arrangement for water purification and supply. Besides, sewage treatment and disposal, garbage disposal and street cleanliness are also its duty. Solid waste management as well as the duty of building and maintenance of roads, streets and flyovers also goes to Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

To say something about its other duties towards the infrastructure of the city, there come issues of street lighting, maintenance of parks and open spaces, cemeteries and crematoriums, registering of births and deaths as well as conservation of heritage sites.

Disease control, including immunization is also one of the vital duties of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Moreover, public municipal schools are also under the supervision of this administrative organization.
