Hooghly Kolkata
The name Hooghly is sometimes also written as Hugli. This is a small town that lies west of the Hooghly River, a branch of the Ganges, and has a history of early initiation towards industrialization on part of Bengal. The history of Hugli is very parallel to that of Kolkata. The place forms one of the districts of West Bengal and that is undoubtedly an important one. The history of Hooghly is tinged with the instances in the colonial era. The region was one of the commanding posts of early colonial powers in the 17th century. Following the decline of Satgaon, Hooghly, Kolkata was originally founded by Portuguese in the year 1537.Hugli region as it exists today is a developing commercial centre. Rice milling and rubber goods manufacture are the prime industries in the region.
