Rabindra Bharati Museum, Kolkata was established on 8th May in the two hundred and seventeen year old building of "Jorasanko Thakurbari" by none other than the first Prime Minister of Independent India - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. More than being a museum, this is a storehouse of various memoirs of Rabindranath Tagore, who is fondly called “Kavi Guru” by the Calcuttans. The various exhibits at the Rabindra Bharti Museum, Kolkata, consist of the original paintings, photographs and other valuable documents of Tagore, which are a source of pride for the entire nation.

Ever since the opening of this museum in 1963, the Museum has added on to its invaluable treasure by acquiring some archival documents, which include:

  -  First edition books
  -  Books on Tagore
  -  Clippings on Tagore
  -  Literature of the House and outstanding personalities of the 19th and 20th centuries

Many of these came as gifts from various members of the Tagore family. The Rabindra Bharti Museum, Kolkata also possesses records of songs in the voices of exponents who learnt songs directly from Tagore. These renditions are a priced possession of the museum alongwith paintings both in Indian and Western style and the Anglo-Indian school respectively and traditional schools of Bengal district and Bazar paintings.
