Missionaries of Charity Kolkata
Hand-pulled rickshaws, tramcars and the Metro rail, crowded buses and chaotic streets, the roadside vendor selling puchkas, and a sea of a million people #- that’s Kolkata, the ‘city of joy’, for the uninitiated! An exotic land, which is a treasure-house of rich culture and a vibrant heritage, Kolkata is home to great personalities, intellectual powerhouses, industrial pioneers and peace-keeping missionaries. Kolkata is home to Mother Teresa and her most prized possession in the world, the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata. The Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, is a Catholic religious order established in 1950, by Mother Teresa, after she received what she called the "call within a call". The substance of this insight is disclosed in the aim and mission she would give to her new institute: "to quench the infinite thirst of Jesus on the cross for love and souls" by "labouring at the salvation and sanctification of the poorest of the poor." On October 7, 1950, the new congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, as well as the Missionaries family of Sisters, Brothers, Fathers, and Co-Workers was officially set up.
The Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, started operation as a small Order with 12 members, and has grown to the strength of over 4,000 nuns running orphanages, AIDS hospices, charity centers worldwide, and caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine.
The most important acts of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, were the setting up of various centers in and around Kolkata that were to exclusively serve to the sick and needy. With the assistance of Indian officials she transformed a neglected Hindu temple into “Nirmal Hriday”, a ‘Home for the Dying’, and a free sanatorium for the poor, at Kalighat. The Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, also established a home for lepers called “Shanti Nagar”, or the ‘City of Peace’ in Titagarh, and an orphanage.
