Mumbai Suburban Railway system is perhaps the most intricate, densely loaded and intensively operated system in the world. Extended over 302 Kms of route, suburban services are run by electric multiple units (EMUs carrying 6.3 million passengers per day. Mumbai Suburban Railway system is operated by the Western Railway and the Central Railway zones of the Indian Railway.Two corridors on Western Railway run northwards from Churchgate terminus parallel to the west coast up to Virar Two corridors on Central Railway run from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Kalyan from where it bifurcates into Kalyan-Kasara in the north-east and Kalyan-Karjat-Khapoli in south-east. The 5th corridor on Central Railway runs as the Harbour line starting from CST to Raoli Junction from where the line splits.

One line goes northwest via Bandra and goes up to Andheri and the other goes eastward to terminate at Panvel via New-Mumbai. Mumbai Suburban Railway has the highest passenger concentration in the World. In spite of intense demands on it, it has afforded an efficient and reliable service. During peak hours 5,000 passengers travel per 9-car train as against the rated carrying capacity of 1,710. Given the geographical stretch of the population and location of business areas, the Suburban Railway continues to be the foremost mode of mass transport in Mumbai.
