History of Mumbai the glorious past of the city

The city of Mumbai previously known as Bombay is one of the major metropolitan cities of India. Mumbai is the capital of State Maharashtra. The city is known as the business capital of India and is the principle financial and communication centre of the country. Apart from having India's largest stock exchange and a major International airport of the country Mumbai also possesses the largest and the busiest port in India that is responsible for handling most of the countries foreign trade. The description of Mumbai remains incomplete without the mention of Bollywood, the country's biggest Film industry that churns out 100's of Hindi blockbusters every year. The present population of Mumbai is estimated to be 10 millions and is still growing. It is the dream city for millions of Indians since the city provides umpteen opportunities to realize their dreams. That's why the city boasts of a diverse population from every nook and corner of India. The History of Mumbai is indeed very much inspiring.

History and Origin of Mumbai :

King Charles II of England was married to Princess Catherine De Braganza of Portugal in the year 1661 and as a part of dowry he was given the attorney of Bombay, now Mumbai. Later on in the year 1668 it was handed over to the East India Company. When the administration of India was taken over by the Queen Victoria of England in 1858 a viceroy was appointed in the name of the Queen to rule the country. It was then that Bombay came under the direct rule and administration of the British rule in 1861. Due to the proximity of the Arabian sea and an ideal setting for a natural Harbor and port very soon Bombay became an Industrial hub. The city became remarkable when the British Government laid the first railway tracks that connected Bombay with Thane in 1861. The year 1864 marked another development of Bombay. It was in this year that Bombay got its first modern water supply and 21 years later in 1864 the city was lit with Gas. The British rule in India also contributed actively to the rich and diverse architecture of the Bombay that is totally unique. It all started in the year 20 th century that the British initiated the construction of Imperial Bombay that started with landmarks such as the Gateway of India, the general post Office, the town hall and the prince of Wales Museum. Thus, the history of Mumbai has been very inspiring.
