Introduction:
Mumbai is the largest of all the populated cities in Maharashtra. Mumbai is one of the major cities in the world that is known for leading in anything and everything. Mumbai is too vast and many interesting sight seeing places are available in this city. INS Vikrant originally known in the Defence sector as the HMS Hercules (R49) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy. The main construction plan for this ship was proposed on November 12, 1943. This plan was proposed by Vickers-Armstrong in Belfast . It was later launched for the construction on September 22, 1945. After the World War II due to some problems, construction was suspended and it was left for further later use. It was sold to India in January 1957. Later on its construction was completed at Harland and Wolff with the most modern and latest design. This design included - angled deck with steam catapults, a modified island, and many more other improvements.
History:
This Majestic-class light air-carrier was commissioned on March 4, 1961. It was done by Indian high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vijayalakshmi Pandit . Though it was commissioned, it was docked at Belfast, Northern Ireland. The name Vikrant is given due to the meaning that it holds- " stepped beyond ". The first commanding officer of this magnificent carrier was Captain Pritam Singh . It was annexed in the Indian Navy at Bombay on November 3, 1961. At Ballard Pier , Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other high-ranking dignitaries received this ship.
Specifications:
INS Vikrant was decommissioned on January 31, 1997. Some of the specifications of this ship are given as follows. Displacement is about 15,700 tons and is taken as standard without load while 19,500 tons with full load. The total length is 192 metres (630 ft) along with waterline estimated up to 213.3 metres (700 ft) under extreme circumstances. It's firing range was estimated to be around 12,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. The ship was designed and built with the aircrafts like the Sea King Mk 42B and Mk 42C, HAL Chetak, Sea Harriers FRS.51, Breguet Alizé Br.1050 in mind.
