Pride PossessionThe Mani Bhawan, Mumbai is an old double-storied structure, which was once home to one of the most famous icons of the century, Mahatma Gandhi. Mani Bhawan was Gandhiji's residence when he visited Mumbai. This monument is located on the Laburnum Road in Gamdevi and has one of the most serene precincts in the city. This heritage structure has now been transformed into a museum and research center. The building actually belonged to Gandhiji's friend, Shri Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri. The Mani Bhawan witnessed the rise of Gandhiji from a freedom fighter to a cult figure who adopted ‘ ahimsa ' (non-violence) and ‘ satyagraha ' (non-co-operation) as the weapons to fight injustice. It was from this place that Gandhiji began several of his agitations against the British that include the Civil Disobedience movement, Satyagraha, Khilafat and Swadeshi movements. Hence, this heritage structure was an integral part of India's freedom movement and occupies a significant position in the life of Mahatma Gandhi.
Today, the Mani Bhawan, Mumbai has the status of a heritage structure and provides glimpses of the life and sacrifices of Gandhiji and his role in India's freedom movement. The museum comprises of several memorabilia and photographs of Gandhiji, which have been very neatly arranged with the supporting piece of information. It also comprises of a rich library of 2000 books, which provides information on all aspects of Gandhiji's life and India's freedom movement. One of the most valuable possessions of Mani Bhawan, Mumbai is the ‘ charkha ' or the spinning wheel that Mahatma Gandhi used. The ‘charkha' subsequently became the symbol of the values and principles preached by Gandhiji.
