Gateway of India Mumbai

Gateway of India Mumbai

About the gateway in short:

The gate way of India, Mumbai is a national heritage building. The towering structure faces the Arabian Sea and forms the starting point for most of the tourists who want to explore the city. Originally the structure was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George and Queen Mary of England. The structure is a perfect fusion of Mogul and Indian architecture complete with four turrets and intricate piece of lattice work which is carved in the yellow basalt stone. Behind the arch there are steps that lead down to the water of the Arabian Sea. It was an irony that when the British rule in India ended in the Year 1947 this colonial symbol of victory became an epitaph as the last of the British ships set sail for England from here. At present the symbol of colonialism got indianised in every aspect and draws droves of tourists.
