Located in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka, Mysore is the second largest city in the state. The city of Mysore is situated at 770 meter above sea level and is 135 kilometers from the state capital, Bangalore. The city is positioned in the tropical state of Karnataka and the temperatures hover around 21 to 34 degree Celsius for most part of the year. The best time to visit this cultural hub of Karnataka is during the winter months of October and March.

Well known for its palaces and gardens, Mysore lies in close proximity with a lot of places of interest – such as Srirangapatnam and Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. This erstwhile capital of the Maharajas of Mysore still restores an old world charm which makes it an interesting tourism destination.

The earliest recorded evidence of the city of Mysore is in the form of stone carvings which can be found in the villages nestled around the city. The city dates back to 1021 and till the twentieth century the city of Mysore has been under the Wodeyar administration. But after 1799 city of Mysore became the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore. One of the most famous rulers of Mysore, Karnataka is the great Tipu Sultan who presided over the city during the 1700s.

The city is also referred to as the City of Palaces due to a large concentration of palaces in the main city. Few of the well known palaces are the Amba Vilas, Rajender Vilas, also known as the summer palace and the Jayalakshmi Vilas.

Mysore is also well known for its handicraft products that range from silk, ivory and sandalwood goods. Handicraft products are major contributors towards the commerce of the city therefore Mysore houses a number of significant handicraft retailing stores and factories on its outskirts.
