Shilpgram - the Rural Arts and Crafts Complex is located to the west of Udaipur and close to Havala village in Rajasthan. The complex is developed over an area of 70 Acres. The sole purpose behind developing this craft village was to promote rural art and handicrafts and to encourage the rural and tribal craftsmen.
The Shilpgram Crafts Village in Udaipur has two Museums where simple things of daily use that depict the art and culture of rural and tribal life, are on exhibition. Besides, craftsmen are invited occasionally to demonstrate their works in front of the visitors at the Shilpgram. Here modern-day urban style of art mingled with traditional rural style produces unique works of ceramics, pottery, and visual art which are placed for exhibition and sale at the time of Shilpgram Festival. Shilpgram Festival is well-known as ‘Crafts Bazaar' and begins in the middle of December every year.
Another event in Shilpgram Crafts Village is ‘Shilpdarshan' in which performers, artists and craftsmen from the associate states of West Zone Cultural Centre are brought together to show their expertise and to sell their works of arts directly. This initiative has inspired the folk artists to keep their dying art forms alive.
A vital attraction of Shilpgram Crafts Village in Udaipur is an open air Amphitheatre which can accommodate almost 8000 spectators. Traditional folk songs, dances and dramas are performed in this amphitheatre. The intention is to rouse interest about rural and tribal performing arts in tourists and local residents as well.
There are also a few huts some of which represents the weaver community in Marwar. Two of them represent the tribal society of the Bhil and the Sehariyas of southern Rajasthan.
