Indonesia air travel is important not only because it is the fastest way to travel, but in many cases because there are no other forms of transportation available. The various islands and cities are connected through airways system.

There are airports present almost in every major city of Indonesia, a total of 62 airports or more. The internal air system links most of the important towns to the capital Jakarta. The main airport of Jakarta is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport which has both international and domestic terminals.

Domestic airlines of Indonesia include: Bouraq Indonesia Airlines (BO), Garuda Indonesia (GA) and Merpati Nusantara Airlines (MZ). The largest domestic carriers are state-owned Garuda and private competitor Lion Air. In recent times a host of low-cost competitors have sprung up, including Adam Air, Indonesia Air Asia (formerly AWAIR), Air Efata, Batavia Air, Mandala and many more.

On the negative side many of the aircrafts are often late or cancelled. The smaller companies have a poor track record with many crashes in the recent years. Many of the aircrafts are old and poorly maintained.

The companies do not have internet facilities, which will make it hard for you to find the suitable carrier and make reservations. However prices are low compared to international standards.

Often to accommodate VIPs, normal passengers’ bookings are cancelled or even checked in passengers shown the door. If you are late, there are chances of airline staff selling your seat to someone else. So mind these if you are planning to travel internally in Indonesia by air.

The booking of flights cumbersome, the aircrafts old and in a depleting condition, the rides bumpy and uncomfortable, the reservation not confirmed – all these may lead to problems in Indonesia air travel. But in many ways it will be a new experience to you as long as there are no very risky conditions. You might even find the ride enjoyable and interesting if you are prepared.
