However, once Soekarno-Hatta International Airport came to function since 1985 and eased transportation in Jakarta, Kemayoran Airport ceased its operation. It derived its name from the former president of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta.
Locally known as Cengkareng, the second terminal of this airport was inaugurated in 1992. Spread across 18 square kilometers, the process of privatizing Bandara Soekarno-Hatta Cengkareng initiated in 2002.
