The train and the Subway Services in Fukuoka share much of the crowd of the city. With a population estimated around 1.2 million or more, Fukuoka Subway system proved as a fast mode of transport. Fukuoka Subway System was born in the year 1973. However the construction work could only be started in 1975 when all the tramlines were shut down.

The Fukuoka Subway Station operates on a 1067 mm gauge. The trains run on the overhead power supply. The trains usually have 6 ATO controlled cars that runs at a maximum speed of 90KM/hr. Usually the trains run on the left hand side. The stations are neat and clean, replete with all modern conveniences for the travelers. The stations have individual symbols and colors as mark of their identity.

The Fukuoka Subway System till 2005 had two lines, which shared a common stretch of 8.5 km between Meinohama and Nakasu Kawabata. But owing to the heavy traffic the decision to construct a third line was taken. It came to be known as Nanakuma Line. The line runs in the Southward direction from Tenjin Minami and covers destinations like Watanabe-Dori, Nanakuma, Hashimoto, and Umeyabashi to name a few. This Subway line is constructed entirely under the ground and has a length of 1435 mm gauge.
