Kushida shrine that lays at the central point of old Hakata is one of the main religious sites of Fukuoka city. It is the spot from where the competitors of Fukuoka's most famous festival, Hakata Gion Yamagasa head off on their long early morning run. The history of this shrine reveals that Kushida shrine was founded in 757AD and is truly spectacular. The wooden and grey combination of this shrine is very gorgeous and yet the somber environment all around will add another charm to the beauty of this shrine.

Kushida shrine contains many things of interest that are centuries old. Among these the most notable are the Eto Arrow Plate with its carvings of the Chinese zodiac and the brace of anchor stones recovered from the harbor that belonged to the Mongolian invasion fleets. There is a Yamakasa portable shrine also.

Kushida Shrine of Fukuoka is dedicated to the grand deity Ohata Nushina-mikoto that enshrined under a ginko tree, located in the forecourt of the shrine and is considered as 1000 years old. According to the legend Kushida shrine is a general tutelary shrine built for the common people.

Hakata Gion Yamagasa festival of Fukuoka is associated with the shrine. One should not miss kazariyamakasa, the decorated floats and the Hakata Historical Museum located within the shrine premises.
