Geography Of Kobe

Kobe is located to the south west of the Honshu Island of Japan. Kobe is well connected to the rest of the country and also with neighboring countries through the Kansai International Airport. Its strategic location and close proximity to Osaka have only added to the economic and cultural growth of the city. This page provides basic information on geography, location, weather and important physical features of Kobe.

The Rokko Mountain Range divides the city into two distinct segments. The southern segment, a narrow stretch of land is about 30 km wide and 2-4 km long. This area houses the majority population of Kobe and is highly urbanized. The hilly mountainous region has for long been restricted to residential use and the new trend is towards building eco friendly residential complexes and small townships in these areas.

Kobe was once considered one of the most earthquake safe cities of the entire nation. However, post the devastation wrought by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, the city has taken adequate prevention and protection against such natural hazards. The quake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale shook the city on 17 th January 1995 for about 20 seconds and caused huge causalities and damage. Kobe has recovered well and has a huge tourist influx in recent times. The climate is pleasant and mild with an average temperature of about 17.1°C.
