Rokko Island Kobe
Kobe is an important port city to the south of Japan and is the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture. Between the years 1973 and 1992, an island called Rokko Island was constructed just off Kobe. The Rokko Liner monorail service, connecting Rokko Island and Sumiyoshi provides easy access to the island and also acts as transport within the island. Built in the shape of a 3.4 km by 2 km rectangle, the island encompasses a total area of about 6.8 square kilometers. The Great Hanshin Earthquake that shook Kobe in January 1995 wrecked havoc on the Rokko Island and yet the island still remains testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Japanese.
The Rokko Island houses a number of hotels and resorts, residential apartments with spectacular views of the seafront, sports arenas and convention centers, the Canadian Academy international school, docks, yards and wharves, the well-equipped Rokko Island Hospital, a number of restaurants, business offices, marts, malls and markets. Rokko Island is Kobe's second artificial island, in the sense that it has been built out of reclaimed land. A number of parks and recreation facilities make this island a coveted residential location. Kobe Fashion Museum is the landmark of this beautiful island.| Hotels in Kobe | |
