Kyoto is famous for its contribution to the Japanese culture. Art forms like the kabuki theater, the No theater were born in this great city. Kabuki theater of Japan is however the most renowned theatrical art form known to the outside world. Every year, during Kaomise festival in Kyoto (held in December), crowd throng to the city to get a glimpse of this month long festival. The popularity of this festival ensures brisk business for the hotels and other establishments of this city.

The much appreciated Kabuki is generally sporadically performed in Kyoto throughout the year. However, all this change in December, when top Kabuki stars of Japan make guest appearances in the month long Kaomise Kabuki festival. During this time the Minami-za theater plays host to this festival. Two long performances are given each day throughout this monthly festival. The first performance usually starts from 10:30 in the morning and continues till 3 o’ clock in the afternoon. After an interval of one hour, the performance resumes again from 4 o’ clock in the afternoon. The performance for the day gets over at 9:30 at night.

You can however leave the performance place at any time you want. The festival is not only about kabuki, it is also about food, shopping and a lot of fun. You can try out some of the best noodles and sushi on the festival venue. If you don’t want to eat or even after a bellyful lunch you feel like shopping for Japanese kimono or any other costumes; you can certainly go for that as well. On the performance venue, such stuffs are sold at more than one place. You can even bargain to get a good deal. Like all great things in life, there is a price to pay to be a part of this great festival. The tickets are priced between 4000 Yen and 9000 Yen. Since this once in a year festival attracts huge crowd from all over the world, prior reservation is necessary. The reservation counter remains open from 10 o’ clock in the morning till 6 o’ clock in the evening.
