Dotted by numerous shrines, parks and gardens; Kyoto becomes overcrowded during December. Tourists flock to watch Takigi No festival.

The yearly Takigi no show held at Heian shrine is an experience of a lifetime. The No theatrical genre, which was originated in Kyoto, is performed against the backdrop of the architecturally brilliant Heian Shrine. Not only the shrine is magnificent; the pine trees at a distance and the far off Higashiyama hills create a truly magical ambience. The night’s program consists of four full length plays and one kyogen. Kyogen is a short comic interlude aimed at providing comic relief after a day full of serious and intellectually engaging set of plays. Torch lighting ritual is held after the first two plays.

Tickets of the event are sold out in advance, so make sure you book your ticket well in advance. This is also a cost effective way to watch this brilliant festival. The advance ticket is priced at 2500 Yen. However, if you buy the ticket on the day of the show, you will have to shell out 3300 Yen. However there is no guarantee that you would be lucky enough to get the ticket. Since No plays are performed in the open, so rain plays a spoilsport. In case of rain, the play is postponed till the next day. The seating arrangement is not at all formal. Do not be surprised if you have to sit on the mat or tiered benches. Since there are no reserved seats, so it is therefore advisable to reach early at the venue. Get yourself a front row seat and enjoy the great plays. Some people make the night even more memorable with good wine and food. The gates open at 4:30 in the afternoon and continue till 9 o’ clock at night.
