Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art
Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art was opened to the public in 1933. It is the second largest art museum in Japan. The museum houses a considerable collection of art in several large and well-lit galleries.Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is the second largest art museum of Japan. Some of the works on display include sculpture, graphic art, prints, photographs and paintings. The collection also comprises of more than 2000 items Japanese paintings, art and architecture. These works were produced after the Meji Period (1868-1912) and was related to Kyoto. Works of foreign artists are exhibited and collected. Some of these are sponsored by the municipal government and art related organizations. The annex of the museum is located next to Kyoto Kaikan Hall. A number of lecture meetings, workshops, and other art related programs are organized during the time of exhibitions at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. Temporary exhibitions are also held here.
The museum building completed in 1933 is a Western style brick building and enhances its atmosphere as a palace of fine ar5t of the old capital. Apart from the numerous exhibits at the museum other exhibitions such as Kyoten Exhibition and the Nitten Exhibition are also held here. Every since the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art opened, it has steadily developed its collection with the help of numerous donations and purchases.
The museum is open everyday from 9AM till 5 PM from Tuesday to Sunday. Although the museum closes officially at 5PM, you must enter the museum before 4:30Pm. It is closed every Monday. The museum also remains closed during the end of the year from December 28th to January 4th. Entry fee to the museum depends on the various exhibitions. The language followed inside the museum is Japanese. There are restaurants within the museum where one can visit for a quick bite. Wheel chair access is available and elevators are installed inside the museum for the benefit of the visitors.
Postcards, catalogs of museum collections, exhibition catalogs and other publications are available for sale to the public. Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is a popular attraction in the city of Kyoto.
