History of Nagoya

The history of Nagoya reveals that the name Nagoya was born out of a corruption of the word Nagono, which was the name for a famed manor in the twelfth century. The Manor being a remarkably prosperous one imparted its name to the entire region that comprises the modern Nagoya.

The medieval history of Nagoya reminds of three renowned heroes who were instrumental in bringing about the unification of Japan. In the decisive battle that followed, Tokugawa leyasu, who was born in the south of Nagoya, was anointed the ruler of Japan. He laid the foundation for Tokugawa Shogunate, which went on to rule Japan for 250 years. These heroes occupy a prominent place in the festivals of Nagoya.

A Castle that was made under the command of Tokugawa leyasu as a residence for his son now stands as one of the most famous monuments in Nagoya. Soon after the completion of the Nagoya Castle, Tokugawa asked the people around Kiyosu to move around the Castle. The area soon thrived into an important town.

Nagoya's first year as a city in 1889 also heralded the arrival of electricity to the place. Thus with the arrival of Nagoya Power Company, Nagoya also received its first streetcar, which could accommodate 25-passengers. In the years that followed the transportation services in the area improved by a great margin and consequently the industries also grew. Among the first industries in Nagoya's history were Itoh Bank, Aichi Basha-tetsudo and Nagoya Gas; these companies still have a strong presence in Nagoya.

The modern history of Nagoya speaks about rapid development that had marked Nagoya's initial years but was thrown off the track following the onset of the World War II. Nearly a quarter of the island was destroyed during the war. The path towards redevelopment was long and painstaking, yet as evidenced by the city- achievable.

In 1959, when Nagoya was limping its way towards normalcy, it was hit by yet another disaster- the Ise Bay typhoon. The calamity left 1,851 people killed and caused inestimable damage to properties.

The historic city of Nagoya has got up on its feet since then and is counted amongst the wealthiest cities in Japan.
