Inuyama Nagoya

Located little over 20 kilometers north of Nagoya, Inuyama is a beautiful city in Aichi Prefecture. Inuyama, which in Japanese means 'Dog Mountain' is known for possessing the oldest castle tower in Japan. Also famous in Inuyama is the extremely sublime Meiji Mura, a museum of houses.

Inuyama Castle
One of the few castles in Japan that escaped the depredations of the turmoil during the medieval age was Inuyama Castle (built in 1537). A more scenic location for the castle could not have been found, placed as it is on a hilltop, Inuyama Castle overlooks the flowing Kiso River. Inuyama Castle is now in the possession of the Naruse family and remains the only castle in Japan which is privately owned.

Joan
Recognized as a national treasure, Joan in Inuyama is one of the most famous tea ceremony houses. Oda Uraku, who was a disciple of Sen-no-rikyu, the much-venerated maestro of the tea ceremony, established Joan in 1618. The tea ceremony is an integral part of Japanese culture and reflects the strong influence of Zen Buddhism. The ceremony comprises many rituals each one requiring great expertise.

Meiji Mura
Meiji Mura in Inuyama is one of the most fascinating open-air museums in Japan. The Museum showcases over fifty buildings from the Meiji Period. Since the period coincided with Japan opening its door to the Europeans, the architecture of the period carries a strong undertone of Western architecture, slipped discreetly under the expansive Japanese architecture.

The concern to preserve the uniqueness of these buildings against rampant destruction was what motivated the establishment of the museum. Some of the most famous buildings are the entrance hall of Tokyo's old Imperial Hotel, Kyoto's Francis Xavier's Cathedral.

The vastness of the Meiji Mura can be best estimated by the fact that it takes more than a day to view all the exhibits.
