Volleyball
The Japanese Volleyball team- both men and women- are placed well within the top ten teams in the world. In the 2006 World Volleyball Championship held in Japan, the host was placed 8th in the men's draw and 6th in the women's.The Japan Volleyball Association organizes V. League, which finds participation from some of the best volleyball teams in Japan. V. League was first conducted in 1994.
Volleyball in Tokyo
It was largely due to its amazing infrastructure that Tokyo has had the privilege of hosting the finals of two World Volleyball Championships- in 1998 and 2006. Among the stadiums in Tokyo, particularly notable ones are Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium and National Yoyogi Stadium No.1 Gymnasium; the two stadiums were the grand locations for the volleyball finals in 2006.
- Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium
Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is located in Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku in Tokyo. The gymnasium was built in 1954 for the purpose of hosting World Wrestling Championship. The gymnasium underwent a massive change in 1991, when it took the shape of Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki's design.
The nearest station to Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is Sendagaya Station on the Ch??-S?bu Line and Kokuritsu Kyogijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line.
Apart from other sporting events, some as prestigious as WTA Toray Pan Pacific Tennis Championships, Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium also plays host to the prestigious national volleyball tournament- The V.League.

NEC Blue Rockets is based in Fuchu City in Tokyo. NEC Blue Rockets is one of the best clubs to have come out of Tokyo. The club competes in V. League. NEC Blue Rockets was formed in 1938 as an all men's volleyball club. It continues to be one even now.
Saori Kimura, who is an integral part of Japanese women's team, was born in Akiruno, Tokyo. She is nicknamed Nippon no mirai Saorin Mugendai, which in English means Japanese future, Saorin is infinite.
