Fuji Matsuri (Wisteria Festival)
April month is a pleasant time in Japan, when the weather is neither warm nor cool and so it is the best time to be out and about acquainting yourself with the history and culture of the country. Moreover, what can be a better way of doing that than participating in the festivals of the land, that unite people across social stratum and political differences, who come together to join in the festivities that have been celebrated since ages. With the consecutive public holidays of "Golden Week", there might be some difficulty in traveling but for those in Okazaki, it is an excellent opportunity to head to the castle and enjoy the "Gomangoku Fuji Matsuri" (a Wisteria Festival - Fuji being the kanji character for the flower, which is also the official "City Flower").Fuji Matsuri or Wisteria Festival is celebrated form end of April to beginning of May in the Kameido-Tenjin Shrine and as with the cherry blossoms of a month; huge crowds gather in the evenings to marvel at the spectacular sight of illuminated flowers. It is believed that the fuji (Japanese wisteria) in Kameido-Tenjin Shrine were planted approximately 320 years ago, at the time when shrine was first built. The captivating pale purple variety of wisteria, trellis captivates many tourists who visit the shrine during this time of the year. Just a sight of the 15 trellises of 100 wisteria plants and the main hall itself, as seen from the Taiko-bashi in the shrine's grounds, makes it worthwhile trip.
