And enjoy the mother of all Hanabi (fireworks) festivals, Sumida River Fireworks Festival which is observed on the last Sunday in July.

Sumida River Fireworks Festival is a renewal of an Edo sight first held in 1733 to formally open the river to boats for the summer. Like green tea, Chinese characters and silk, fireworks first reached Japan from China. Since then, they have very much become part of the culture, with firework parties taking place up and down the country during summer.

The fireworks displays formally resume at 7p. But here you have to be a bit alert for if you want to enjoy the show best you will better secure your seats in boats by the afternoon. And then enjoy the spectacular pyrotechnics.

This national and annual numerous fireworks (hanabi) festivals are celebrated in Japan every summer. The biggest of these is the show over the Sumida River, a major event on the cultural calendar of Tokyo, with amazing multihued layers that blossom into the night sky to wonder the millions of audience flocked along the banks or in boats on the river.

Many tourists and Japanese wear customary kimono and fiesta dress for the event. The highlight of the display is a dazzling competition between highly acclaimed fireworks manufacturers. The gala attracted well over 100,000 visitors. During this time whether you are on the river, or on the banks, on the crowded subways or on the roads, it is a fun experience.

This biggest fireworks display in Tokyo is one of the best you'll ever see, with the extra delight of street stalls serving hot sake, corn on the cob and other treats. Some 20,000 individual rockets are fired from two separate bases along the river in a visual feast that lasts for over an hour. Most of the 900,000 viewers go to Asakusa's Sumida Park, which gets extremely eventful, but is worth a bit of crowd barging for the amazing atmosphere.
