Its time to celebrate life through the eyes of films in Tokyo. The month of November brings the most celebrated occasion of Japan, the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). This festival is among the twelve largest film festivals in the world. Moreover Tokyo International Film Festival is the only approved film festival of Japan which is recognized worldwide.

The Tokyo International Film festival has a strong influence on the Japanese film industry. Even the Japanese culture is heavily influenced by the film festival.

Started off in 1985, the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) quickly established itself on the cinema map of the world. From 1985 to 1991 the event was chiefly a bi-annual event. Thereafter the city of Tokyo hosted the festival every year with all its grandeur and success. Presently the festival has successfully placed itself as a major event not just in Japan but throughout Asia. It stands on equal shoulders with other famed film festivals like the Hong Kong and Pusan International Film Festivals.

The festival has seen changes in the awards given in he different categories but the top draw remains the same as the Tokyo Grand Prix being awarded to the best film. The other awards given out on the occasion includes the Special Jury Award and awards for best actor, best actress and best director. It is a special feeling fo the winners to win the silverware at the Japanese Film Festival.

The festival runs in many different categories. Each one appreciates the films to its best in the categories. The traditional "Competition" category draws the best of the films of the worldwide notice which competes for the coveted Tokyo Grand Prix. The festival plays host to 'Special Screenings' of highly entertaining works which are yet to be released or are not released all over. The very much sort after category of 'Winds of Asia' showcases new tends in Asian culture and the ever popular 'Japanese Eyes' brings out the best out of the Japanese movies.

The venue for the screening of these movies has usually been the Bunkamura complex. Also these movies are showcased at the Roppongi Hills Virgin Toho Cinema. The venues remained unchanged till the 19th version of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).

Typhoon Club (Director: Shinji Somai) was the first movie to win the Grand Prix at the festivals and the prize was not awarded in the year 1995.
