Yayoi Matsuri
Japanese academic and financial calendar begins in April. April is the month when the academic session starts for Japanese children, a new business year starts for corporate houses, businesspersons, companies start hiring, and many new graduates begin work. In fact, the cherry blossoms during this time of the year connote auspicious new beginnings for many Japanese people. An important Tokyo festival celebrated during this time of the year is Yayoi Matsuri. The term Yayoi is actually derived from the traditional Japanese calendar, where Yayoi is the name for the month of March. This is a traditional spring festival of Futarasan Shrine, Nikko, which started in 767-770. The Yayoi festival was initially celebrated in March at that time, corresponding to the meaning of the term "Yayoi" as interpreted in the ancient calendar. However, with the modernization of the calendar in 1873, the dates of the festival changed to today's schedule, falling in the month of April.
Yayoi Matsuri Festival of Futarasan Shrine, Nikko, features trademark attractions of any other popular Tokyo festival, including a parade of gaily-decorated floats, which parades through the streets with more than 10000 townspeople joining in the procession.
It is a famous saying that the Spring of Nikko begins with Yayoi festival. The Yayoi festival begins from April 13th to 17th in Futarasan Shrine, beginning with moving three portable shrines from Takinoo Hongu shrine to Honsha shrine on the first day of the festival, April 13th. Later in the day Yaotome maiden dance is performed.
On 14th of April, that is the second day of the festival, portable shrines in Takinoo Shrine are moved to Takinoo through Toshogu Shrine, to be enshrined in Haiden oratory.
A divine ceremony is carried out on the April 15th.
