This museum exhibits items related to Japan's military history. You will find a few exhibits related to the Samurai spirit and Japan's military traditions prior to the 1860s. But with the construction of a new building and a complete overhaul in 2002, the two-floor museum today has two large exhibition halls, twenty exhibition galleries, two theaters, and two special exhibition galleries. There are three thousand or so small photos exhibited in three exhibition galleries at the Yushukan which houses war dead from both the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army, whereas other Japanese museums which display about kamikaze attacks cover only Navy or Army operations. Each photo gives the person's name, military branch (Navy or Army), rank, date and place of death, and home prefecture.
The Japanese War memorial museum has many photos, diaries, poems and letters of the young dead soldiers. These letters reflect on the life of the dead soldiers and their feelings before their missions of death. You simply can't stop your tears as you go through them. This museum exhibit photos of individual pilots, groups such as kamikaze units and training classes, and places such as former air bases. For example, the Etajima Museum has photos of individual pilots displayed in rows together with each pilot's basic biographical data, such as name, unit, date of death, age at death, and home prefecture. The Japanese War Memorial museum has restored planes or other weapons used in suicide attacks like the front exhibition hall of Yasukuni Jinja Yushukan museum which displays a restored Zero carrier fighter, the plane type used for many kamikaze attacks.
You will also get to see showcases that reveal a wide variety of special attack and other artifacts. Besides these there are military uniforms, medals, hachimaki or headbands, model planes, paintings, and senninbari or the thousand-stitch belts worn for good luck.
