The Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo is a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art of Japan. This art museum displays art and artifacts, not only of the country but also of the world.

The Setagaya Art Museum was opened on March 30th 1986. The museum is situated in an area of 40 acres and is situated in a residential area in the Setagaya area of Tokyo. The building occupies an area of 8000 square meters. The museum is surrounded by lush green garden that serves as a popular spot for family outings. Located at the end of the park, this museum is one of the best places to learn about the art and culture of Japan.

The museum displays numerous art works, not only of the country but also of the world. The exhibits found over here consist of paintings, ancient prints, crafts, sculptures, films and other related matter that are worth checking out. One of the biggest attractions of the museum is the Mukai Junkichi Annex. This annex houses the works of art by the famous artist Mukai Junkichi. You can get to see the painters working quarters as well as a storage center where you can see the articles used by him. Apart from this, the museum also has a wide collection of paintings made by the artists who resided in the Setagaya area. One can find both historic as well as modern paintings displayed on the walls of this museum.

The museum is a two-storied building. The first floor of the museum has a number of special exhibition galleries, where special exhibitions are held. There is an auditorium equipped with audio-visual equipments. A large number of seminars and other programs are held in this museum. There is also a museum shop from where one can buy a large number of souvenirs, gift items, books, postcards, pictures and other articles from here. There is also a restaurant called 'Le Jardin', where one can get to eat snacks as well as full meals.

The second floor of the museum has a permanent collection gallery. Here you can see the numerous artifacts displayed on the walls as well as in the glass cases. There is also a lecture room where a large number of seminars are conducted on Japanese and world art. This floor also has an Art Library, which has a wide collection of books related to art and culture. Art lovers and students one can browse through the books to learn more about art, paintings and craft. Apart from these, the museum also has a number of workshops where a large number of activities related to art.

The museum is open form 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is closed on Monday and entry to the museum is by paying a certain fee. The general entry fee is 200 Yen. You can reach this museum by taking a Shibuya bus to Kinuta Machi and then walk for 10 minutes till you reach this museum or take a train along the Tokyo line to Chitose Funabashi station.
