Jindai Botanical Garden
The Jindai Botanical Garden is positioned at the border of the Musashino plateau, which is just above Jindaiji Temple in Chofu in Tokyo, Japan. Here you will find a wide variety of plants. Each and every area of its 30 acres land possesses selection of one kind of plant. Displays of ume, cherries, azalea, dogwood, peonies, roses, wisteria, etc. can be noticed every month of the year. Moreover, just in front of the temple below there is a wetland appropriate for aquatic plants, where irises are cultivated.The Jindai Botanical Garden has contained 100,000 trees and shrubs representing around 4,500 varieties, each with an identifying label mark. Not only this, but also the park has a plant safety program to protect rare Japanese species. It also holds exhibitions and activities related to gardening for the benefit of local citizens. Just outside the rear gate there is an area where a few choice plants are sold to visitors.
Once the site of Jindai Botanical Garden was part of a medieval citadel believed to date from 1537. Later it became a garden center that supplied street trees to Tokyo. In 1961, it was opened to the public and became the first botanical garden in Tokyo. The second oldest one in Tokyo, Jindaiji Temple, is downhill from this garden.
