What attracts visitors towards Hama-Rikyu Garden is primarily a magnificent salt-water pond. With the pattern of tides in Tokyo Bay the water in the pond rises and falls throughout the day. As a result, the landscape of the garden constantly changes. This park is fairly wild as well as woody in places.

Hama-Rikyu Garden had been an official duck hunting ground in the 17th century (Edo era). Duck hunting continued until 1944.

In spring, rape blossoms turn the garden a rich yellow. It's also identified for its peonies that flower in late April and a three hundred-year-old pine tree.

Admission: 300 yen (Over 65's, under 12's are free).

How to get there

Avail the JR Yamanote Line to Shimbashi Station. Leave via the Ginza exit and have a walk down Sotobori Dori Avenue towards the direction of Ueno and Senju. Keep on going until you notice the Shuto Expressway. Follow the Shuto Expressway direction as it brushes to the right and then look out for signposts. This is 10 to 15 minutes walk.
