Historic Village of Hokkaido Japan

The island of Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan and is the land of winter sports, historic towns, national parks and most importantly the open air museums.
Sapporo is the largest city in the island and in the suburbs of Sapporo, in the Nopporo Forest Park (Shinrin Koen) is located the Historic Village of Hokkaido, Japan, famous as an Open Air Museum. The Historic Village covers an area of around 54 hectares.

The historic village of Hokkaido has put up 60 typical buildings from Hokkaido which was built during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It was the phase when Hokkaido witnessed the maximum development.

The Historic Village of Hokkaido remains closed on every Monday and during the New Year period.

Features:

- The Historic Village is divided in four main zones, Town, Fishing Village, Farm village and Mountain village.

- The Old Sapporo station building is the entrance to the Village. Once in the threshold of the village you will find yourself in the frontier period of Hokkaido.

- Transportation is provided by a horse drawn trolley along the main street. The street is lined by beautiful wooden and stone buildings.

- The traditional houses feature the farm life of the immigrants from Honshu.

- The Shinto shrine in the Village is the venue of the harvest festival held during the autumn.

- The open air Museum gives the opportunity to study the rest of Japan in contrast to the era of Colonization of Hokkaido.

By Rail: Take a local train on the JR Hakodate Line to Shinrin Koen Station. You can either walk from there which will take you around 15 minutes or avail a 5 minutes bus ride.
