Hari Raya Festival
The word 'Hari Raya' literally translates into 'Celebration Day'. This is the day when Muslims all over the world celebrate after fulfilling a month of holy fasting, which is referred to as the Ramadan month. During this period, many of the bazaars which are a form of night market called the 'pasar malam' are held every evening in different parts of the country. The markets are the places where all kinds of stuff like traditional Malaysian delicacies are found, as Muslims come here to purchase and prepare the food for the breaking of the fast at 7 pm each day during the month of October.Apart from the bazaars, many of the hotels provide guests with ample dining opportunities to sumptuously feast on Malay cuisine for the breaking of the fast. At the end of the month, when the fasting ends and the Hari Raya finally takes a start, it is the time for reunion and celebration among the Malay Muslim population and their kin. Families pay a visit to graves and children seek forgiveness from their elders. Many of the people in this community hold 'open houses' to welcome guests and friends to revel in the good cheer of the festive season. The festival gives visitors a fascinating insight into the culture of the Muslim religion in Malaysia.
