Mid Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival in Kuala Lumpur is also known as the Moon Cake or Lantern Festival, which had originated during the period of conflict with China in the 14th century. While the Chinese in different countries celebrate this festival with different traditions and practices, it is commonly envisaged that the event commemorates the summer harvest season of their ancestors, as also the fall of Mongolian rulers in China after a successful rebellion. On the day of the uprising, the rebel leaders delivered thousands of moon cakes to the homes all over the city. Each cake contained the date and time to rise up in revolt. On the night of the Moon Festival the rebellion began and effectively drove away the Manchurian oppressors.
The Chinese in Malaysia purchase and consume moon cakes to of different flavors, including some outrageous ones like durian and coffee. Their immense popularity has made the hotels stock their own freshly-baked moon cakes to enable their guests to savor them. They often attempt to out-rival other hotels with preparing quality moon cakes with new designs and delicious flavors.
Beginning with the traditional red beans or lotus paste to the novel ice-cream versions, the moon cakes are a once-in-a-year delight. On the night of the festival, children throng the streets with paper lanterns designed like animals, vehicles and the Chinese 'Tan Lok' foldable lanterns.
