City Day Festival
The Federal Territory Day which falls on 1 February each year is a state holiday celebrated by the City of Kuala Lumpur, the administrative capital of Putrajaya and the island of Labuan which together, form the Federal Territories of Malaysia. It is a commemoration of the declaration of Federal Territory of Malaysia signed on 1 Feb 1974.In Kuala Lumpur, the Federal Territory Day celebration takes place at the Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) near the Lake Gardens, the green-lung of the city. Visitors to Malaysia will be treated to two other significant celebrations in the month of February; the Malidur Rasul (Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday) on 5 February and the Hindu celebration of Thaipusam on 7 February.
As a multi-racial and multi-cultural country, Malaysia offers a kaleidoscope of colourful events, customs and religions. The recent Chinese New Year Open House celebration with its colourful parades, lion dances and spectacular firework is one of them.
Together, these religious festivals of Malaysia bear testimony to the tolerance displayed by the various communities (such as the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and other indigenous groups) that live together harmoniously.
