This is the place that has it all, from a thriving nightlife to reminisces of a bustling metropolis, Kuala Lumpur is where the enthused vacationer should be. Merely a more than 150 years in terms of age, the city is home to diverse cultural, traditional and ethnic Diasporas. AsiaRooms.com is here offering you all the information regarding Merdeka Square Area, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building rests the Dataran Merdeka or the Independence Square. It was formerly known as the Selangor Club Field before being upgraded and renamed into what it is presently known as. The new name is a better reference to its status as the Independence Square for this was where on the midnight of August 31, 1957 the Malayan flag was hoisted for the first time in the history of Malaysia after obtaining independence from the British rule. To commemorate the event, a 100 meter high flagpole was erected which was also the highest in the world.

Every year on August 31, the Merdeka Day Parade is held here. Apart from this, the place is also the venue for open air concerts, carnivals, the starting/finishing point for marathons etc. Occasionally, it also serves as the cricket venue as it used to be in the days of the Empire. Beneath the flagpole is housed the Plaza Putra an underground complex for food, leisure and entertainment, as well as an underground parking bay. Unfortunately, the Independence Square was flooded in recent years and now remains closed to the public. The other end of the field houses a relaxed fountain area where you can sleep for hours after a day’s exertion as the breeze cools those frayed nerves.

Right opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is the elitist Selangor Club, a colonial inheritance of the days of yore that is still in operation. Here, only whites were allowed which is why the area is historically relevant. Now the Square hosts the festive National Day Celebrations each year. West of the junction of the Twin Rivers, Klang and Gombak, Merdeka Square is easily identified as a square, open, grassy space. At the end of the wide street that travels west to the north of Merdeka, lies the Congress Building and other structures that were constructed between the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
