Petronas Towers

Petronas Towers

The tallest building in the world - the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur - had come alive after its completion in 1997 in a striking combination of glass and steel. Designed to epitomize the grace and strength of the geometric principles that encompass Islamic architecture, the buildings are joined at the 41st and 42nd stories, at a height of about 175 meters above street level. The opening ceremony of the Petronas was done amidst a display of scintillating fireworks and a spectacular light and sound show.

Situated in a prime location in the capital, the gleaming tower indicates Malaysia’s ambition in the millennium. Craning their necks to look upwards, thousands of Malaysians gathered before the 88 storey towers as laser beams shone high in the sky to illuminate the nation’s rite de passage. The laminated windows paneled in blue glass shone as the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad officially inaugurated the latest economic landmark of the country.

The five minute light and sound display which was titled, ‘A Vision Realized’ traced the efforts of the nation in realizing some of the projects that have contributed to its economic prosperity. The occasion was held on the National Day which is a reminder of the days of tin and the paddy fields.
